Bushido

Translated as “the way of the warrior,” Bushido refers to the moral code and way of life followed by the Japanese samurai. Caliber wanted to create something visually distinct and unique, consciously avoiding clichés, while remaining respectful of the traditions that inspired Bushido. Caliber drew inspiration from the imagery of the Japanese religion, Shinto, and Japanese folklore, and took them in a new direction.

The fox, or kitsune, is a figure closely associated with Inari Ōkami, a prominent Japanese spirit. The creation of a fox mascot became the foundation for the Bushido brand and gave it its distinct personality. Inspired by traditional kitsune imagery, the mascot feels mysterious and expressive, while connecting the contemporary design back to its cultural roots. The fox also allowed us to create a balance between elegance and playfulness throughout the packaging.

Rather than a traditional bottle and cup, Bushido brings sake into a portable ready-to-drink format designed for convenience and impromptu enjoyment. The can features a removable plastic top, creating a drinking experience that feels approachable and suited for enjoying alongside food, with friends, or on the go. The agile fox is the perfect match for the agility of the Bushido packaging.

Before arriving at its final foxy form, Bushido went through many iterations. We explored different illustrations, styles, packaging structures, symbols, layouts, and ways of balancing traditional references with a more contemporary identity, with each exploration helping to refine the final direction. Through the process, Bushido developed into a striking system that brings together cultural inspiration, visual storytelling, and a modern way to experience sake.
